When Mark Hogancamp (Steve Carell) is brutally attacked, his memory is left in tatters and his spirit crushed. He begins to find solace in Marwen, an imaginary Belgian town under Nazi occupation that he constructs in his garden. Peopled by dolls that bear resemblances to his friends and tormentors, Mark escapes into a rich fantasy world that just might be the key to his rehabilitation. Based on the documentary Marwencol, director Robert Zemeckis handles the mix of a grand story with an uncynical innocent at its heart, just as with Forrest Gump. The dolls of Marwen – played by Janelle Monáe, Diane Kruger, Leslie Mann and Gwendoline Christie, among others – are brought to amazing life with Zemeckis’s trademark wizardry, but it’s the tale of rebirth that will stay with you.
