In Production
We are delighted to announce that London Borough of Richmond upon Thames (LBRuT)
have approved our planning application and the works to the building can
now commence.
We now can start re-building, restoring, installing specialist equipment,
furnishing and decorating the building. We will email everyone who has registered their details for updates with news of how it's going and when we can expect the doors to open, and you can find regular updates here.
Planning Update
- November 2011
The building needs a change of use classification to operate as a cinema, which meant the submission of a rather weighty planning application to the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames (LBRuT), which was presented in January 2011, with a decision due date of May 13th. However, due to staff shortages within the planning department, our application has been held up and we are still awaiting a final response.
We were recently informed that our planning application will go before the planning committee. We anticipated that would be at the December 1 meeting but, after LBRuT missed the report deadline, we are now hoping to be on the agenda for the following meeting(s) at the end of December/mid Jan. We have no reason to believe the committee result will be anything other than positive, thus enabling us to get going.
Undaunted by planning delays, we have been working behind the scenes, consulting with architects, designers, restauranteurs, contractors and cinema fitters and carrying out exploratory works, doing everything we can to ensure we are in a position to move quickly once LBRuT give us the go ahead. We are aiming to be selling popcorn about six months after receipt of permission.
Barnes Fair
- July 2011
In July we held a stall at Barnes Fair where hundreds of people popped by to find out about the cinema. It was a fantastic (and very busy!) day and we loved to hear your stories about the cinema's early days as a theatre and then recording studio. The free popcorn went down a storm too!
Competition
- July 2011
We held a competition to win tickets to the Opening Night and nearly 1000 people entered at the stall and online. We are pleased to announce that the winner is... (fanfare) ZEE BAILEY, who will be joining us on the red carpet in Spring 2012.
A big thank you to everyone who entered and to those that came along to say hello at the fair.
Planning
- June 2011
LBRuT’s public consultation received an unprecedented number of letters of support. Thank you to everyone who wrote in (over 700 at last count). Feedback is really positive, with our local MP and Ward Councillors all being very supportive.
- May 2011
Following our consultation and overwhelming local support, we are currently awaiting final planning approval from Richmond Council in order to start works and we aim to open Spring 2012.
- Feb 2011
Richmond Borough Council have recently validated our planning application, which means that we have provided everything they need in order to consider our application for a change of use, in order to open as a cinema.
A big thank you for helping to make it happen.
The Olympic Cinema Team
Open Day
- Oct 2010
A huge thank you to everyone who came to see, ‘what’s behind these windows’ at our sneak preview days. We were blown away by the response – nearly 2,500 came to offer comments, feedback and overwhelming support. For those who could not make it, there are pictures below.

We have used comments and suggestions from the sneak previews to guide us in putting everything together; from Founder Membership, to the type of films you want to see – the majority not wanting to miss out on the latest 'must-see', or Pixar offering served up with a healthy dose of retrospectives and world cinema too, which we aim to achieve by having two screens, giving us the capacity to screen something for everyone.
To that end, we have had very positive feedback from the film industry; both from the major film studios who have been to see the building and are happy to give us ‘first run’ films, preview screenings etc.; to smaller cinema chains who are interested in helping with the booking and technical side of things.
Support from the borough’s residents is instrumental in driving this forward, so a big thank you for all your wonderfully positive feedback.
